Michael Norman Bagley

Michael N. Bagley (born December 8, 1969): I am fifth year graduate student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California at Davis. My course and research focus is in transportation engineering and planning. Curr ent research interests include: (1) determining the impacts of advanced telecommunication technology on travel behavior, air quality and land use, (2) developing statistical utility models based on survey data; most recently looking into telecommuting cen ter preference models and residential location choice models, (3) exploring the impacts that household characteristics, such as gender and size, have on individual and household travel behavior and (4) exploring the Internet as a research tool and predict ing its potential impact on communication and travel.

My research advisor and mentor is Dr. Patricia Mokhtarian, member of the Institute of Transportation Studies and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Davis. I completed my Masters degree in 1995 hope to earn a Ph.D in my field by the summer of 1998.

My overall goal is to become a professor and consultant in the fields of engineering, statistics, and mathematics. I have completed three different one-year programs focusing on the professional development of future faculty members: The Program of Colleg e Teaching (1995), The Professors for the Future Program (1996), and The Teaching Assistant Consultant Program (1997); for more information visit the following website http://moby.ucdavis.edu/trc . I have been a nominated for the campus-wide outstanding teaching assistant award the last two years for work done in two engineering courses: ECI-114 (Engineering Probability and Statistics) and ECI-163 (Energy and Emission Impacts of Transportation).

Outside of work and college I have many interests which keep me busy and happy. First, I am married to a wonderful woman named Amelia and we enjoy many activities together, including: sports, cooking, and traveling. Second, I enjoy exercising every mornin g before work by lifting weights and jogging. Third, I spend quality time with my little brother Nick, who was matched to me from the organization Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Finally, socializing with friends and family whenever possible is a joy. And if y ou think you have a cool cat, you should see my big tabby cat, Sam.
