Apple Valley Telebusiness Workcenter

This center has been open in the high desert area of San Bernardino County since October 1991. It continues to be funded by the Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District, and has received corporate support from Xerox (fax and copier) and IBM (personal computers).

The telecenter work area has twelve cubicle workstations and no private offices. Equipment includes 14 personal computers that range from PC XT's to 486s (new computers will be purchased to replace the PC XT's during the next several weeks). The center also has a PictureTel 1000 videoconference system. Rent at the facility is currently $247.44 for a workstation with a telephone, voice mail, and use of other office equipment. Additional fees are charged for facsimile transmissions, photocopies, and telephone toll charges.

A marketing plan is being developed and will be implemented by the High Desert Regional Economic Development Authority, which received a $30,000 grant for that purpose. A marketing survey has been conducted, and the report will be completed within a few weeks. Discussion about marketing strategy will begin upon receipt of the report.

Twelve telecommuters from five different employers currently use the facility. Three to five telecommuters are in the center each day.
