Ontario Telebusiness Workcenter
This site was opened in October 1991, and is managed by the Center for the New West, an independent, non-profit institute for policy research. It is located just off the freeway near the Ontario airport. Several restaurants are available in the immediate vicinity and other services are nearby. One restaurant is located in the same building as the telecenter.
The center contains a total of 18 open-area workstations, two conference rooms, a kitchen, a separate lounge area, and two semi-private offices that are leased to full-time tenants. All workstations are equipped with personal computers, including 386s, 486s, and a few IBM PS/2 model 30s. One of the conference rooms contains a PictureTel 1000 videoconference system. The center also offers 4 laser printers, several dot matrix printers, facsimile and photocopy machines, and can provide voice mail upon request.
Funding for the center is provided by the City of Ontario and Caltrans; and Xerox provided upgraded photocopy and fax machines at the center in February 1995. Telecommuters can rent a workstation for $150 per month plus any additional expenses, such as voice mail service.
Most of the site's marketing efforts are still coordinated with the Inland Empire Telecommuting Partnership, which includes Apple Valley Telebusiness Workcenter, Highland Telework Center, Ontario Telebusiness Workcenter, and Pomona Telebusiness Workcenter. The group pools most of its marketing resources and promotes all of the centers. For instance, PacTel provided posters promoting all of the sites and installed them in bus shelters in Pomona, Ontario, Apple Valley, and Riverside. Also, Caltrans supports a toll-free telephone number (800-COMMUTE) that allows callers to get information about several transportation demand management programs, including the Inland Empire Telecommuting Partnership. The group is currently preparing a promotional video.
The site currently has a total of 25 to 30 active telecommuters from four employers. An average of three people telecommute from the site each day.
