MODESTO
Modesto Neighborhood Telework Center

This site is under the direction of the City of Modesto. The center is located in an office building; it is surrounded on three sides by a residential neighborhood and is across the street from a modest commercial strip. Restaurants, shopping, dry cleaners, and child care facilities are all within a quarter of a mile.

The telecenter has 1,062 square feet of space that contains two private offices, an open area with six workspaces, and a conference room. Each workspace is equipped with a new computer: the center currently offers seven IBM 486 PCs with modems and one Macintosh computer with a modem. There are also four new shared printers--two color ink jet printers and two laser printers. Two ISDN lines have been installed by one employer in a private office for dedicated use in the center by its employees.

Other support for this center comes from the City of Modesto in the form of month-to-month funding, and Pacific Bell has provided office furniture. A potential grant from the State Petroleum Violation Escrow Account is now pending--a final decision will be received in September.

The site administrator has been very successful at generating free publicity for the telecenter. Human interest stories about the center and its telecommuters were aired on the news broadcasts of all three Sacramento television stations during 1995. In addition, the administrator addresses groups in the region who are interested in learning more about telecommuting.

Ten telecommuters currently use the Modesto Neighborhood Telework Center. Over the last several weeks, the center has been used an average of seven person-days per week.
