The Coronado Telecentre - This site is under the direction of the Coronado Transportation Management Association. Open since early October 1993, the center occupies the back portion of a 1,640 square foot one-story building it shares with the administrative offices of the Transportation Management Association and another enterprise. The center itself is 725 square feet. It comprises four cubicle workstations, a conference room, restroom, site administrator's office, and small kitchen area. It is equipped with three personal computers: two are furnished by the center, and one is furnished by a telecommuter, for his exclusive use. All computers are AST 80386 with internal fax-modems. The center provides Windows, Publisher, Corel Draw, Lotus 1-2-3 and connectivity to Internet through modem. The center will provide software as requested. The center also provides secured space for users in the form of locked drawers designated for each user.
Recruitment efforts have been targeted to the City and County of San Diego, in addition to the Navy and Federal government. Promotional plans include using the local access cable channel to broadcast public service announcements, and using volunteer community response groups to distribute promotional materials. Other promotional tools include the development of news releases to region-wide newspapers, and radio public service announcements as well as invitational open house tours of the facility. Referrals have also been a strong recruitment resource. Currently, the center has seven telecommuters working there a total of 2.5 person-days per week on average. Most have technical occupations from both public agencies and private enterprise.
Because this center shares the facility with two other agencies, rent, utilities and cleaning expenses are also shared. This allows the developer to offset direct costs associated with the daily operations of the telecenter. The developer also plans to strengthen the economic viability of the center through multi-use; in this case, by integrating distance learning, on-site telecommuter training for home-based telecommuters, and computer classes into the center's functions.
The site itself is in downtown Coronado, and close to most amenities, including banks, groceries, health clubs, cleaners, schools, the post office, restaurants, drug stores and auto repair stations.
