Sacramento / Modesto

Modesto Neighborhood Telework Center - This site is under the direction of the City of Modesto. The center occupies 2,600 square feet in a new two-story building of an industrial park. This facility is surrounded on three sides by residential neighborhood, and is immediately adjacent to commercial strip development on the other side. Restaurants, shopping, dry cleaners and child care facilities are all within a quarter of a mile.

The center contains ten private workstations and one conference room. Four of the workstations are equipped with 80486 personal computers; one workstation is equipped with a Macintosh. The computers are all linked on an open Unix-based local area network. Two ISDN lines have been installed by one employer in a private office for dedicated use in the center by its employees. While there are no audio-visual conferencing capabilities at the center currently, the developer plans to lease equipment for this in the near future.

Lawrence Livermore Labs has secured a private office with two workstations for five days a week. San Joaquin Council of Governments has provided for participation of two of its employees to use the center one to four times a week. A third private company has one employee working from the center three to four days per week. All current users have professional/technical occupations.

Recruitment efforts have been in the form of mass mailings to commuters in the area. Names and addresses were procured from the Commute Connection database. Promotion activities include a billboard at Alamonta Pass publicizing the center, and media coverage by newspapers and radio. Grand opening ceremonies for this site were held October 27, 1994.

On-site user services include access to faxing; at this time, no copying services or access to a copier is provided, although there are plans to make this available soon. The center is in a secured building which users must have a key to access. There is no on-site administrator.

Other sponsorship for this center has been provided by Pacific Bell, which donated the furniture for the center, and by additional funds from the San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District.
