This exercise will help you identify how to delegate work to
different employees or for different jobs.
- Review the section on Delegation.
- Respond to each question by keeping in mind whether you are
directing, coaching, supporting, or delegating.
- After completing this exercise, identify how you should
manage each of your telecommuters.
In each of the following situations, identify what style of
management you will assume to resolve the situation.
- You are the leader of a unit of telecommuters that operates
very well on its own. You have been asked to reduce your
operational costs. How will you ask your unit to develop
objectives?
- You manage a group of clerical employees that manually code
surveys. How will you ask them to meet their objectives as
telecommuters?
- You have a telecommuter that has been with the company for
three months. She seems very eager and independent. How will
you instruct her to complete a report?
- A very productive and efficient member of your staff has
asked to telecommute. How will you communicate your
expectations?
- You manage a unit that is very competent and productive.
In the past, you have been directing and coaching their efforts.
Several members want to telecommute. How will you ask them to
develop their objectives?
