Exercise #3
Review

This worksheet will help you determine whether or not the telecommuter met the specified objectives and deliverables. For a detailed description of how to apply the review process, read the "Objectives" section of the Telemanager Manual.

Reviewing what has been accomplished is the last step in the managing by objectives process. If you do not include a review step in the managing by objectives process, you will never know if the telecommuter was successful. This last step enables you to determine "what has been done" or if the end result has been achieved. The review step should be completed shortly after the deadline for the deliverables. A review session between the telecommuter and the telemanager may include a discussion of new objectives and deliverables. If you are working with a weekly list of objectives and deliverables, you will probably review the telecommuter's progress at the end of the week. If you are working with objectives on a monthly basis, then the end of the month is usually an appropriate time to review the telecommuter's accomplishments. No matter how busy you are, do not forget the review step; the telecommuter deserves a big pat on the back for meeting his or her objectives! If the objective is not met, schedule time with the telecommuter for coaching and mentoring.

Directions for completing this exercise:

  1. To complete the form, fill in the telecommuter's objectives and deliverables.
  2. Next, determine whether the objectives and deliverables were met. Check the appropriate box to indicate whether the objective was met or not.
  3. You may want to add another category in the rating section for "exceeded expectations."
  4. Use the comments section to explain any extenuating circumstances. If there were extenuating circumstances which prohibited an objective from being accomplished, note the details of that circumstance in the comments section.
  5. If an objective is not accomplished, carry it forward to the next rating period and schedule time with the telecommuter for coaching.

Keep this exercise simple. If the telecommuter has examples of outstanding efforts that have been accomplished, attach them and refer to the attachments in the comments section of the review worksheet.

Use the review process to measure the telecommuter's accomplishments and shortcomings. This process will help identify areas for improvement. It is being established to document the telecommuter's success and help the telecommuter understand what is needed and required for success.

The following instructions explain how to complete this exercise alone, with your telecommuter, or with your telecommuter in a training class:
