Exercise #1
Job Responsibilities


This worksheet will help you determine the different responsibilities that make up your job. For a detailed description of how to determine what job responsibilities are, read the "Objectives" section of the Telecommuter Manual.

Most jobs can be divided into the following three categories: the kind of knowledge required to do the job, the skills required to complete the job, and the employee traits needed to be successful on the job. Once you and your supervisor determine what responsibilities fall into each category, it is easy to establish objectives for your job.

Directions for completing this exercise:

  1. Ask your supervisor for a copy of your job description.
  2. If a job description does not exist, begin writing all of the responsibilities of your job. Then divide the responsibilities according to the categories on the Job Responsibilities Worksheet. (Refer to the completed worksheet example)
  3. If there is a job description for your job, then begin dividing the responsibilities according to the categories on theJob Responsibilities Worksheet. (Refer to the completed worksheet example)
  4. Photocopy enough copies of the worksheet to complete this exercise. Fill the worksheet with your job responsibilities.
  5. If your telemanager has completed worksheets for your job responsibilities, compare the two. If not, share your worksheet with your telemanager and request feedback.
  6. Based on your telemanager's feedback and the worksheet you completed, you should have an adequate list of responsibilities to begin working on the objectives worksheet.

Keep this exercise simple. Keep the responsibilities list broad. You will be more specific when you develop objectives for your job.

This exercise has been developed as a growing and learning experience. Remember, this process is being established to document your success. The process is flexible and can be updated.

The following instructions explain how to complete this exercise alone, with your telemanager, or with your telemanager in a training class:

If you are a telecommuter reviewing this as a self-guided manual

  1. Read the "Objectives" section in this manual. If you can attend a training class, do so.
  2. Complete the exercise according to the above directions.
  3. Obtain feedback from your supervisor.
  4. You are ready to begin working on the objective exercise.

If you and your telemanager are reviewing the self-guided manuals

  1. Read the "Objectives" section in the Telecommuter and Telemanager manuals. If you can attend a training class, do so.
  2. Complete the exercise according to the above directions.
  3. Together review both versions and develop a final job responsibilities document.
  4. You are ready to begin working on the objectives exercise.

If you are a telecommuter attending a training class

  1. Fill out the worksheet according to the instructor's directions. When you return to your office, read the "Objectives" section of the Telecommuter manual.
  2. Share your worksheet with your telemanager.
  3. Together review the worksheet and develop a final job responsibilities document.
  4. You are ready to begin working on the objectives exercise.
