California moved one step closer to a clean transportation future as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger launched the nation’s first Hydrogen Highway Network on the campus of UC Davis on April 20, 2004. With over 150 national, state and local officials in attendance, the governor stated, “This is the future of California and the future of our environmental protection”. Immediately following his announcement, he signed an executive order to create the hydrogen highway network in California by 2010. UC Davis Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef also attended declaring the campus as, "The pre-eminent university in hydrogen-fuel research and teaching." Leading the way is the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies. With more than 40 faculty members, 15 research faculty and 80 graduate students, the Institute is host to several hydrogen and fuel cell vehicle programs, including the Hydrogen Pathways Research Program. Under the direction of UC Davis professor Dan Sperling, the Institute continues to expand its research, education and outreach activities in the area of clean vehicle and fuel technology.
