Homework #1 - Energy and Fuel Cell Fundamentals - Due October 27, 2004

Project Description
Investigate and analyze one feedstock for use in a hydrogen pathway and a non-hydrogen pathway.
Students work in groups of 2-3

  • Look at particular feedstocks /energy resources that can be used for hydrogen production.
  • Analyze two separate pathways for this feedstock
  • One pathway should include hydrogen production for transportation purposes.
  • The other should be a non-hydrogen pathway (e.g. electricity production).

  • The goal is to investigate alternate uses for a given feedstock and compare the tradeoffs (economic, engineering and environmental) for the hydrogen use versus the other.
  • Research technologies for various components of the pathway and try to make an assessment of the overall efficiency of the process from well-to-tank.
  • Use H2A and other analyses to determine economic costs associated with hydrogen production in this pathway.
  • Indicate life-cycle emissions for pathway
  • Investigate the costs of environmental benefits
  • Issue report and class presentation

Groups and topics will be determined shortly.

An updated version of the project is described in this project description document.
